This fungal disease produces necrotic lesions which develop further into premature defoliation in severe cases, leading to reduced crops in subsequent years. The levels of infection are increased in wet years, due to splash dispersal of spores.
Resistance is controlled by two complementary genes, Pr1 and Pr2 (Anderson, 1972) and screening for resistance is routine in most modern blackcurrant breeding programmes, with the majority of new cultivars having reasonable resistance to D. ribis.
